LECKHAMPSTEAD
VILLAGE HALL
Leckhampstead village hall is a multi-purpose, affordable venue in a charming rural setting opposite the village green.
Recently completely refurbished inside and out, it is run and maintained by a committee of villagers, with other volunteers lending a hand with any work that may need doing.

Now boasting a fully equipped kitchen and access for disabled people, It is used for a wide variety of events, meetings, classes, parties and activities, - often with the additional use of the village green - and is available for hire.

The hub of the community
In 1888, a parish reading room was set up in the village school for men and boys over the age of 13.  In the early 20th century, the reading room transferred to a new home on the other side of the road. Constructed largely of corrugated iron at a cost of some £80, it became known as the Iron Room.

The rules were clear. They included a ban on all profane language, no intoxicating liquor and no making off with the newspapers. Smoking and playing permitted games were allowed.

Times changed! By the start of the 21st century, what had by then become the village hall for the benefit of the entire community and beyond had fallen into a sorry state. It was in desperate need of a complete restoration to make it safe and sound for future use. This came with a price tag of at least £80,000.

Though only a small village, residents rose to the challenge to save this hub of Leckhampstead life. A huge fundraising effort was launched, and within two years had raised £35,000 through events and donations.

So impressed was Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN) - which provides grants under the Landfill Community Fund scheme - it offered a grant of £40,000. Additional grants from Leckhamptead Parish Council, Aylesbury Vale District Council and the Bucks Foundation secured the funding neeed to restore the hall inside and out.

The new-look village hall was officially opened in 2008. In 2017, the finising touch was added with a specially commissioned oak sign.
Woodcarver Mick Waterhouse and the oak sign he created.
